Microsoft Notebook Cooling Base
Lotta Hot Air
This thing came out, and just like that, my career as a corporate fire eater went up in smoke.
So, you’re going to buy Microsoft Notebook Cooling Base? Well, I hope you like it. Because I don’t. Not because it doesn’t work. No, that’s just the problem; it does work, and because it does, I cannot.
It was nearly two decades ago that I left the circus to pursue other options. There were endless employment opportunities for fire eaters like me those days. Corporations hired us in droves to come in and suck the hot air out of overheating computers. Was it as exciting as life under the big top? No. But the company that took me in gave me a salary and benefits, and to be frank, the circus had grown tiring. I wanted to settle down. I wanted to start a family. I wanted to know what it was like to stay in one place for more than a few days. I needed stability.
Things went well for a while. Everyone in the office liked me and appreciated what I did. I treated the big wigs in the offices with respect. I made small talk with the data-entry folks crammed into their cubicles. The guys in the IT department (where I had my desk) loved to hear stories from my past, about the clowns and the elephants and the bearded lady. I even met my wife, Regina, in that office when her laptop got so hot the mainboard almost melted.
It seemed like I was set, like I’d found a way to put my one and only talent in life – the intake of heat – towards something productive, something helpful. I had a regular schedule, a regular life.
Then the Microsoft Notebook Cooling Base came along, and my world collapsed. With its efficient cooling channel to direct heat away from the laptop, it could do my job but better. It didn’t have “off days,” it didn’t need sick time. It’s lightweight and compact, designed for lap and desk use, so it was always there. It was never down the hall or working with someone else.
Could it smile and ask you how your day’s going? No. Could it sing karaoke at the company Christmas party? No. Could it contribute an “amazing” seven-layer bean dip to the bi-monthly potluck? No. But those things are easy to overlook by someone in a windowless closet of an office somewhere crunching numbers. And that’s just what happened. The numbers were crunched and I was let go. Regina says it’ll be okay, that I’ll find somewhere else where they’ll appreciate me, but I’m not sure. Corporate heat eating jobs are few and far between these days, and the freelance market just about hit rock bottom a couple years ago.
But I’m sorry. I feel I may have gotten carried away with the personal details. You see, I mean to say only one thing here: this Microsoft Notebook Cooling Base might not cost much to you, but for some of us, it’s cost us everything we once had.
